Zhu Yinghao is a Chinese photographer, artist and travel writer based in Beijing, originally from Jinhua, Zhejiang. He studied Arabic at Beijing Language and Culture University and previously worked in media for many years.

He is a seasoned travel columnist for media such as CBN Weekly and Modern Weekly for more than ten years. His photographic works have been selected for the Three Shadows Photography Award, the Lianzhou International Photo Festival, and the Jinan International Photography Biennale. Zhu’s photographic and written works have been published in Chinese and international journals including China Photography, Financial Times, Life Monthly, Conde Nest Traveller, National Geography, and New Travel. The latest photo book, “Imaging Across the 1868 Strata,” is featured in the anthology The Third Departure, released in 2024 by independent publishing house Dandu(单读).

Whether in the early stages of his career, when he focused on documentary films and humanistic writing depicting the lives of ordinary people caught in the turmoil of war in Syria, Iran, and other regions, as well as the clash between tradition and modernity (he was among the first Chinese creators to witness the Middle East firsthand), or in his later work, the video installation Gauze and Walls, which reflects on how two generations respond to the shaping of individual values by mass media through the lens of family bonds.

Zhu’s work focuses on cross-cultural exchange, travel culture, and the archaeology of food. His latest project, Imaging Across the 1868 Strata, is a deep dive and reinterpretation of a 4-years-long scientific expedition in China by the 19th-century German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen. Drawing from Richthofen’s travel journals, letters, and maps, the project weaves together text and images to retrace the geological, cultural, and scientific landscapes he encountered. It reflects on the present through the lens of the past, at a critical historical moment of East-West knowledge transmission. Zhu Yinghao’s new works have been exhibited at venues including Guangdong Times Museum, Tank Museum, Fotografiska Shanghai, and Mokanshan Art Museum.
